CFHI was founded by Dr. Evaleen Jones when she was a Stanford medical student. Seeking a 4th-year elective rooted in anti-colonial dynamics, Dr. Jones was unimpressed by the options available to her. She set up an elective with Dr. Edgar Rodas, who was utilizing a mobile surgical unit to increase access for rural populations in Ecuador.

Upon her return, Dr. Jones started CFHI. 32 years later, CFHI is thriving and expanding its offerings to both university partners and individual students. Final-year medical students can choose from an array of rotations, including Public Health in Delhi, India, Hospital Medicine in Cape Coast, Ghana, Comprehensive Mental Health Care in Córdoba, Argentina, and much more.
