This rotation is based at the maternity hospital in Ecuador’s capital city of Quito.

Ecuador has undergone multiple reforms leading to a robust primary care-based health system.  Access to healthcare and reproductive health is guaranteed in the country’s constitution.  The maternal mortality rate has decreased from 32 per 100,000 live births in 2020 to 18 in 2022. Indigenous women are nine times more likely to die than non-indigenous women, highlighting ongoing opportunities for health equity. The country has focused on institutional deliveries and skilled birth assistants.  Research has shown cultural barriers to access for Indigenous women that the health system and healthcare workforce are working hard to address.

Trainees can witness intercultural health policies in action during this rotation.  Clinical activities include shadowing labor and delivery, gynecology, post-partum care, and antepartum outpatient practices.
