Beyond Medical “Missions” to Impact-Driven Short-Term Experiences in Global Health (STEGHs): Ethical Principles to Optimize Community Benefit and Learner Experience

CFHI Executive Director, Dr. Jessica Evert, Dr. Melissa Melby, Dr. Lawrence Loh, Dr. Christopher Prater, Dr. Henry Lin, and Dr. Omar A. Khan describe the ethical concerns surrounding short-term global health experiences and the disciplinary approaches that can be incorporated to increase their effectiveness and sustainability in this Association of American Medical Colleges article.

In this Association of American Medical Colleges article, the authors propose four core principles to guide ethical development of educational short-term global health experiencies (STEGHs). The goal of these principles is to structure STEGHs that address, rather than perpetuate, underlying power imbalances ethical pitfalls, resource differentials, and inequities that the global health movement seeks to eliminate. Published in the Journal of Academic Medicine.
