CFHI recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic is causing concern for students, families, and academic partners. The safety and well-being of our participants remains our top priority, and we commit to best pactices in preparedness and risk management policies at each of our program locations.


What is CFHI doing to respond to COVID-19?

We are closely monitoring COVID-19 and its impact on communities around the world, especially in CFHI program locations. We are consulting our experienced in-country partners as well as advisory organizations including OSAC, the WHO, and the CDC. CFHI’s utmost priority is the safety and well-being of our participants, and this commitment necessitates evolving policies to respond to rapidly-changing situations like the global impact of COVID-19. 

How will COVID-19 affect my CFHI program?

As of March 19, 2020, the US State Department issued a Level 4 advisory, encouraging U.S. citizens to avoid all global travel; in response, CFHI has temporarily suspended new arrivals to our global programs through May 31, 2020. 

This travel advisory is in response to increasingly unpredictable measures to limit traveler mobility, including flight cancellations, mandatory quarantines, and border restrictions. Additionally, as a leader in ethical and responsible global health engagement, CFHI is also considering the impact of participants travelling from the US, where the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is currently significantly higher than in many of our host communities. Discounting the additional risk posed to these communities - particularly where there may be under-resourced health systems - is antithetical to our commitment to upholding ethical best practices in global health.   

CFHI programs beginning June 1, 2020 and onward are operating as scheduled. Please continue to refer back to this webpage for ongoing updates. What should I do if I need to change, postpone, or cancel my program?


To ease the burden on participants, we are trying to be as flexible as possible with program changes, postponements, and cancellations. Please reach out to to discuss your options.

What do I need to know about travel to and from my program site?

Disruptions to air travel may occur as flights are cancelled or re-routed to avoid areas of concern. Some airlines are waiving change fees as a response to these disruptions. Please contact your airline directly about policies, changes, and cancellations. During travel, participants should allow additional time for increased health screening measures at airports.
