  Palliative Care In Southern India

"Calm, positive, and respectful, he [Dr. Raj] has a way of making the patient and the family feel that he has all the time in the world to spend with them –they have no idea that he has six more home visits to do."

Note: This program is only offered in July and November 2012 (4 weeks)

  • “About 1.6 million Indians endure cancer pain each year. Because of tobacco and betel nut chewing, India leads the world in mouth and head tumors, and has high rates of lung, breast and cervical cancer. Tens of thousands also die in pain from AIDS, burns or accidents. But only a tiny fraction, Dr. Rajagopal estimates 0.4 percent, get relief” (McNeil, NY Times).

CFHI's program "Palliative Care in India" is a one of a kind opportunity to learn from the "Father of Palliative Care" in India, Dr. Rajagopal (Dr. Raj), and to witness first-hand the realities of providing care for terminally ill patients and those suffering immense pain in a developing country.  Dr. Raj is a leader throughout the developing world and has been featured in the New York Times. He specializes in practicing palliative and hospice medicine with limited resources, as well as advocating for policies and education to overcome hurdles to accessing essential medications for the control of pain and suffering.

Partake in a unique and pioneering community healthcare service program by learning about the challenges faced by palliative care in India. Students will participate in lectures provided by Pallium India during their first week to better understand palliative care and its role in India, including pain management, the role of family, and the role of spirituality in palliative care. During the last three weeks, participants will join the Pallium India team on homecare visits and other healthcare facilities, such as a hospice care center and local clinics in neighboring villages near the city.

The World Health Organization describes palliative care as "integrating the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care as applicable early in the course of illness, in conjunction with other therapies that are intended to prolong life, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and includes those investigations needed to better understand and manage distressing clinical complications."

CFHI has joined with Pallium India to help foster a new palliative care global health experience. You can read more about CFHI's collaboration with Pallium on our blog.
