Amazon Community and Indigenous Health, Ecuador

“It was powerful to experience first-hand how limited resources in certain clinical settings can not only be frustrating - but how, for example, not having oxygen or an intubation kit at a clinic could cost a baby his life. It was fascinating to talk to the doctors, nurses, etc. about their experiences within that health care system.”  August 2009 (MS-1, Albert Einstein College of Medicine)

    • Because of the special conditions of rural life, health services require patterns of delivery quite different from those in cities. Most of the problems arise from families living in dispersed areas and the transportation difficulties.
    • Geographic & socioeconomic difficulties hinder both indigenous and non-indigenous persons in the Ecuadorian Amazon from accessing adequate health care.

Participate in community healthcare services and learn about healthcare challenges facing rural communities in the town of Puyo in the Amazon basin. Although access to healthcare services in this region is free of charge, those seeking care face a variety of hurdles including geographical, financial, and cultural barriers. Learn how local healthcare practitioners overcome these challenges and provide services though a combination of public health outreach and community visits.

Participants in this program May Choose From Two Tracks:

A. Community Medicine Track

B. Indigenous Health Track

When submitting an application, make sure to note Track A or Track B under "Clinical Interests: Other". Selecting a track will determine the activities and rotations you are involved in for this program.

Community Medicine Track: What is Community Medicine? It is a branch of medicine that is concerned with the health of the members of a community. The emphasis in community medicine is on the early diagnosis of disease, and the prevention of disease within the community. This unique track will offer students the opportunity to be at the front lines of healthcare services at the community level, participating in clinical rotations and community health outreach campaigns and brigades within and outside of Puyo in rural areas.

Within this track students will witness the unique ways in which socioeconomic and cultural factors have shaped the healthcare system of the region. For a more detailed description: Community Medicine Track.

Indigenous Health Track: Participants who chose this track will have a fantastic opportunity to  interact with indigenous communities and their traditional practices. Participants will gain an understanding of where traditional medicine and allopathic medicine intersect in the context of ancestral healing traditions.  For a more detailed description: Indigenous Health Track.

BOTH TRACKS begin with one week of Spanish classes and an orientation to Ecuadorian culture in the capital city of Quito, including clinical rotations at a local tertiary care hospital. The remainder of the program will be spent in the town of Puyo, where students will participate in clinical rotations or site visits to indigenous communities, depending on the program track.

Please note that the Indigenous Health Track focuses on traditional indigenous medicine and its main emphasis is not on clinical rotations. The Community Medicine Track offers a more clinically oriented program.
