  • Oaxacan Secretary of Health statistics show that 75% of maternal-infant death and illness in Oaxaca occurs among the rural indigenous population
  • Oaxaca is the poorest state in Mexico
  • Oaxaca has the largest concentration of indigenous populations, with over 12 languages spoken

Oaxaca is an excellent setting for studying the healthcare system of Mexico and the healthcare practices of the population. Students often hold the assumption that the healthcare is available to all, but find in Oaxaca that poor and rural populations are increasingly unable to compete for scarce health resources. Between Maya territory and the highland valley of Mexico is the cultural crossroads of Oaxaca home of the distinctive Zapotec and Mixtec Indians. Both of these groups developed advanced cultures.

"Oaxaca remains one of the richest states in the world - in history, culture, tradition, natural beauty, unexploited mineral deposits and other natural resources. It is also one of the poorest - in average income, in modern and efficient services of water, drainage and ... healthcare."

Oaxaca, where CFHI students can explore a different culture and way of life while learning about the region's healthcare system through clinical rotations, is truly a crossroad where different cultures and healthcare practices intersect. Oaxaca City, one of the most unique cities in Mexico, is steeped in history, tradition, and the influences of a vibrant indigenous culture. Students will be immersed in the region's language and rich culture while learning about contemporary social issues facing the local population.

Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico, and many of its inhabitants, especially those of the large indigenous population in rural areas, have limited access to even rudimentary healthcare services. Participants will be exposed to various elements of Oaxacan healthcare: public and private, urban and rural.

CFHI programs offer participants the opportunity to learn more about health issues that transcend national borders, class, ethnicity, and cultural divisions.  By participating in CFHI’s global health education you will gain a unique insight into healthcare systems of developing countries and increase your cultural competency. Increasing one's awareness of other cultures (cultural competency) is becoming increasingly relevant for healthcare professionals as industrialized countries become more ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse. Click here to read an article and learn more about why cultural competency is important for today’s healthcare workforce.
