Gunjan Sinha
Board Chair
Gunjan Sinha joined CFHI’s board in 2001. Gunjan is Chairman at MetricStream and is responsible for leading the strategy and execution with the company. Most recently, Gunjan served as eGain's co-founder and President and has spent over a decade in various product, sales management and executive positions developing, marketing and selling software and Internet services. At eGain (NASDAQ: EGAN) he led Sales, Marketing, Services since inception and served over 800 global customers in targeted financial services, telecom and retail verticals. Prior to eGain, he was the co-founder and President of WhoWhere? Inc., a leading Internet services company acquired by Lycos in 1998. Gunjan also co-founded Viman Software, Inc. and Parsec Technologies Pvt. Ltd. He obtained his BS and MS degrees in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology,
New Delhi , and UC Santa Cruz, respectively. He also holds an MS in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management from
Stanford
University. Mr. Sinha was featured as one of the 50 most successful immigrant entrepreneurs in the U.S.
Josh Pickus
Vice Chair
Josh Pickus joined CFHI’s board in mid-2005. He joined SupportSoft as CEO and president in April 2006. Prior to SupportSoft, he served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Computer Associates’ (CA) Clarity Division, part of the Business Service Optimization unit, and is responsible for the division's sales, professional services, marketing, and research and development. Previously, Mr. Pickus served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Niku Corporation, which CA acquired in August 2005. Prior to becoming Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Pickus served Niku as Chief Financial Officer and, prior to that, was Niku's President, Vertical Markets. Before joining Niku, Mr. Pickus was a partner in the private equity group at Bowman Capital Management, a technology investment firm, and a partner at Venture Law Group, a
Silicon Valley law firm. Mr. Pickus holds an A.B. in public and international affairs from
Princeton
University and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.
Alan D. Biller
Treasurer
Alan D. Biller is president of Alan D. Biller & Associates, Inc. of Menlo Park, California, an investment consulting firm specializing in working with multiemployer benefit plans for more than 20 years. Mr. Biller has written several articles and serves as an expert witness on fiduciary investment management. He has a bachelor's degree from Yale, a master's degree from the University of London, a Ph.D from Columbia University and an M.B.A from Harvard.
Laurie J. Price, Ph.D. M.P.H.

Dr. Laurie Price joined CFHI’s board in 2004. A medical anthropologist with twenty years of Latin American field involvement, Laurie Price is currently Professor and Chair of Anthropology at California State University Hayward. She also has experience teaching in a medical school (
University of
North Carolina ,
Chapel Hill ). Laurie’s areas of expertise include research methods, a
Latin America regional course, cultural epidemiology, and applied anthropology. In 2001, she established a new Applied Anthropology M.A. program at
Cal
State . Her research and publications have focused on medical pluralism in (use of hospitals, pharmacies, and traditional healers) and family management of illness. She also has done applied work on Hospice care in the , doctor-patient communication, AIDS prevention programs, and arthritis treatment in rural areas.
Ajoy Mallik
Ajoy Mallik joined CFHI's board in 2003 and was the Chair from 2005 to 2007. Based in Saratoga, California, Ajoy has global responsibility for Venture Capital FOR TCS (TATA Consultancy Services) - Asia's largest software services company and part of the TATA group; the largest Indian business conglomerate. He serves as advisor, investor, and board member to several start-ups in the U.S and In recent prior roles he served as head of business development and strategy for 123SignUp and Odesk. He has also worked at Peregrine Systems, responsible for the alliance with IBM's software group in
North America and EMEA. He holds an M.B.A. in International Business and Information Systems and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the
University of
Maryland,
College Park.
Marcia A. Hatch

Ms. Hatch joined CFHI’s board in 2004. She joined Heller Ehrman LLP in 2003 and is a member of the Corporate/VLG Practice Group. Ms. Hatch’s practice includes securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance. Ms. Hatch's practice is focused on the corporate representation of emerging growth companies and venture capital firms. She has extensive experience in private company financings, public offerings, mergers and acquisitions, debt transactions and corporate governance. She works with clients in biotechnology and life sciences, in software and communications, and in energy and clean technologies.
Evaleen Jones, M.D., ex officio
President/Founder & Medical Director
Dr. Evaleen Jones founded Child Family Health International in 1992. She is a graduate of Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of California , San Francisco Family Medicine Residency. She currently holds a position on the Clinical Faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Jones is an active member of the Global Health Medical Education Consortium (G.H.E.C.), which is comprised of US, Canadian , and EU faculty and educators dedicated to gloal health education. Evaleen's commitment to the underserved stems from growing up in rural New Jersey and spending her college years in the Appalachian region of Virginia, where poverty prevails. Dr. Jones began her work in international health taking trips to Latin America as a medical student. Within five years, she founded CFHI to support her on-going work to promote better global health conditions. Now, fifteen years later, CFHI has grown to a 3.4 million dollar organization that works with over 250 global partners (NGO's, physicians and academic institutions) and sends 700+ medical students abroad each year while complimenting the partnerships with over $1million in donations of medical supplies and grants for health projects each year. She works actively to support the organization's growth and development, traveling extensively to strengthen sustainable healthcare for underserved communities worldwide. She is married and has two sons, Kodiak age 10 and Miles age 7.
Ellen Levy, Ph.D.
Ellen Levy joined CFHI’s board in 2004. Ellen Levy is Managing Director at Silicon Valley Connect. Prior to that, she was the Director of Industry Collaboration & Research for MediaX at
Stanford
University, and has held venture capitalist positions, both as a Managing Director at NeoCarta Ventures and at Softbank Venture Capital. Dr. Levy has also worked in management level positions in a number of technology startups Softbook Press and WhoWhere, as well as technology companies Interval Research and Apple Computer. Outside the world of technology, she worked for the Harvard School of Public Health, planning the VIIIth International Conference on AIDS. She currently serves on the Board of Child Family Health International, on the advisory board for a number of
Silicon Valley startups, and is a Charter Member of the Indus Entrepreneur Organization (TiE). Dr. Levy received her M.A. & Ph.D. at
Stanford
University in Cognitive Psychology. Additionally, Dr. Levy was a 2004 White House Fellows Regional Finalist.
Steven E. Schmidbauer, ex officio
Executive Director
Steven Schmidbauer joined CFHI as Executive Director in 2004. Prior to 2004, he served six years as a program manager and director for one of the largest child and family service agencies in
California, where his work in innovative program development was recognized at state and national levels. Steve received the Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the
California
State
University at
Hayward in 1998. Prior to working in California, Steve was a volunteer teacher in (1982-1985) and from 1990-1993, he worked to support international relief efforts in Central and
South America. Steve holds a B.A. in Journalism, Broadcasting, and Speech from the State University of New York College at Buffalo, and an M.Div. from the
University of
Toronto. Steve travels extensively, making annual visits to CFHI sites worldwide.

Lena Dalke
Programs/Office Assistant
Lena Dalke began working with CFHI as the Bilingual Program Assistant at the end of August 2006. She has a long history of participating in service-learning and community development projects in a variety of cross-cultural experiences. She worked on community health and nutrition issues through Americorps in North Philadelphia and later with the American Friends Service Committee in rural communities in
San Luis Potosí, . She returned to on several occasions to facilitate groups of international volunteers and students with Servicio, Desarrollo y Paz A.C. in
Xilitla, and with Los Niños International in the Tijuana-San Diego border region. After graduating from
Hampshire
College with a B.A. in Liberal Arts, she developed a passion for Women’s Reproductive Health and worked as a counselor at Cherry Hill Women’s Center in
New Jersey before moving to the Bay area. She is enthusiastic to combine her two interests in health and global issues through her work supporting student projects at CFHI.
Becky Davis
Alumni/Outreach Coordinator
Becky Davis joined CFHI in early 2006. Within her role as Alumni/ Outreach Coordinator, Becky manages CFHI's rapidly growing Alumni network, develops new alumni opportunities and services, and conducts outreach for CFHI's global health education programs. Prior to working for CFHI, Becky spent a number of years working in the hospitality industry in San Diego, where she lived after studying Spanish and participating in service-learning programs in Costa Rica. During her studies in England, Becky interned for People and Planet,
Oxford (a UK based organization working to alleviate world poverty, defend human rights, and protect the environment) and helped write the Responsible Tourism guidelines for The Gambia. She is originally from Oxford, and has lived in
California for 5 years. Becky has a B.A. in Sociology with Development Studies from AFRAS at the
University of
Sussex (UK) and an M.Sc in Responsible Tourism Management from the International Centre for Responsible Tourism at the
University of
Greenwich,
London. Becky is UK Cultural Ambassador for Step Up Travel (an online Responsible Travel community) and takes great pride in being part of an organization which is truly working in a socially responsible and financially just manner.
Betsy Fuller Matambanadzo
Special Projects Director
Betsy Fuller Matambanadzo is the Programs Director for Child Family Health International (CFHI) and has been a primary coordinator for CFHI’s global service-learning programs since April of 2000. She has managed over 30 global and domestic partnerships with physicians, coordinating agencies and universities. In prior positions at CFHI she facilitated clinical electives abroad for over 1,400 students in the health sciences. Ms. Matambanadzo has traveled to all CFHI program sites in Bolivia, Ecuador, India, Mexico and South Africa,
and is an expert in international exchange program design, implementation, and management. Additionally she manages Community Health Initiatives supported by CFHI in partner communities. In the past, she has volunteered as an Advisory Board member and Chairperson for BRIDGES, a non-profit organization in
Oakland that supports international grassroots exchange among low-income community leaders, and as Chairperson for International Volunteer Programs Association (IVPA). She is currently active with Priority Africa Network, promoting education, awareness and advocacy around issues that affect the African continent in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ms. Matambanadzo has a B.A. in Sociology and African Studies from the
University of
Arizona , and participated in international experiential education during high school and university through Nacel (Cote D’Ivoire, 1991) and the School for International Training (South Africa, 1997). When not at work, she plays and travels with her husband and son.
Menraj Sachdev
Program Development & Quality Manager
Menraj is currently completing his Masters of Philosophy (Research Degree) from the University of Sydney, titled: Higher Education in a Transition Economy: The Case of India 1991-2003, for which he spent approximately 6 months in India interviewing Education and Information Technology Professors at various higher education institutes. Before his research took him to Australia and India, Menraj completed a BA in Human Development from UC San Diego. During his time in San Diego, Menraj had the opportunity to partake in his first round-the-world travels through the Semester at Sea program in 1996. After graduation, Menraj continued his love of travel, venturing to the UK, India and Southeast Asia. At one point, Menraj spent one month tutoring Tibetan refugees to speak English. As an ardent traveler and an international educationist, Menraj brings his wealth of experience and insight gained through travel to assist CFHI in its goal to be at the forefront of providing students and academic institutions with the highest quality of Global Health Electives within the Study Abroad field.
Polina Spivak
Bookkeeper
Polina Spivak began working for CFHI as the Bookkeeper/Registrar at the end of November 2006. Polina handles various functions related to program payments and oversight of CFHI's accounting practices. She moved to San Francisco in1996 from and worked for six years as a Financial Assistant in Walden House, Inc. In addition to this, Polina has a wealth of experience in accounting from the time she lived in her native Ukraine.After graduation she started working as an Accountant in the Science/Development Institute and has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Odessa State University.

Harini Krishnan
Recover Program Coordinator
Harini Krishnan began working with Child Family Health International (CFHI) as a volunteer in October 2003 and joined the staff in February 2005 as the Recover Program Coordinator. Harini works with the Program Director to implement the solicitation, collection, inventory and shipment of recycled medical supplies to CFHI partners abroad. Prior to her involvement with CFHI, Harini worked in program and development roles with several non-profit organizations including International Rivers Network, International Medical Corps and UNICEF, in
New Delhi. Harini has a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in French from
University of
California , Irvine and a Masters in International Relations and Public Administration from
University of
Southern California . She is married and has two young girls, Janani and Abhaya, who keep her busy in her time away from CFHI.
Hema Pandey
India Coordinator
Hema Pandey, an independent contractor based in Delhi and serving as our India Coordinator, joined the CFHI team in 2005. She has been instrumental in establishing CFHI's growing presence in India, developing new program sites and researching CFHI's growth potential in-country. With more than 10 years of experience in the health field, Hema has handled a wide range of projects for government and non-government organizations in India, including the Indian government's Year of Scientific Awareness (YSA) 2004, which highlighted needs and issues related to disaster preparedness, health & nutrition, and soil & water conservation. As part of this project, she organized events at the state level, including: conferences, seminars, street plays, group discussions, and school activities. She also worked with Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) - and was a core part of the team that conceptualized and implemented a live interactive health show for a national television audience.
Nick Penco
Student Programs Coordinator
Nick Penco joined CFHI in the spring of 2005. He is a native of Argentina, who has lived in the for 20 years. He graduated with a bachelor's in International Relations from
San Francisco
State
University . He worked full time while in school in the hospitality industry, which served as a great benefit to CFHI, where he now works as a primary person communicating and supporting CFHI's 700 yearly students on a daily basis. Penco travels extensively for CFHI, facilitating bilingual evaluation site-visits around the world. He is also fluent in French, German and conversational Portuguese. Penco sits on the Board of Directors for the non-profit organization Family Link in
San Francisco, California.
Rachel True
Programs Director
Rachel True joined the CFHI team in June 2007. Rachel brings a background in public health, non-profit management, program development and tremendous enthusiasm to her new post. Her interest in service learning and international health started as a volunteer for a small, community-based health clinic in coastal in 1999, an experience which had a profound impact on her personal and professional development. Since then she has worked as an outreach worker and advocate for culturally sensitive health services for immigrant families in Marin County, and as the executive director of Global Health through Education, Training and Service (GHETS), a small non-profit organization in Boston, MA. Rachel received her Masters in Public Health in 2005 from Boston University where she focused on international and reproductive health. Her research on integrated reproductive health services in western broadened her horizons, which had been focused largely on Latin America, to East Africa and beyond. These academic and professional experiences have confirmed Rachel’s commitment to programs which recognize and encourage local strengths, priorities and leadership and which are built with long-term sustainability in mind.

David Tozer
Outreach/Development Manager
David Tozer joined CFHI in April 2006 as the Outreach/Development Manager. David handles external communications and event planning with the media, universities, foundations, corporations and individuals. He also works with the board and management to identify and deliver on CFHI’s development opportunities. Before moving to
San Francisco last year, he worked in a project coordination role for a life sciences company while completing his law degree. Prior to that, David served as managing editor for eTherapy.com, a Miami-based behavioral healthcare start-up, and has over 10 years’ experience teaching language and literature courses to university students in Japan. He received a B.A. in English Studies and an M.A. in Critical Theory from
Nottingham
University in the UK.
Avril Whate
Africa Coordinator
Avril Whate was introduced to CFHI, in 2004, but officially started work on April 1st of 2005, as Medical Director for the Cape Town program before moving to the role of CFHI's Africa Coordinator in 2007. She is a registered nurse, and has worked for the Department of Health in for over 20 years. Avril has a B. Tech. Occupational Health Degree, a diploma in Nursing Management, a diploma in Community Health Nursing and midwifery and is a Clinical Nurse Practitioner, certified in Advanced Pediatric Life Support. She has also recently completed a pharmacy dispensing course, and various other related short courses. Avril worked for many years at the Grootte Schuur Hospital in the trauma unit, and from this experience became very passionate about three things: teaching (working with students), trauma nursing, and working on CFHI’s programs. In her own words, “I love being involved "hands on" with my patients, and being a clinician, rather than a manager.”
